Kankakeeans are so lucky to live in such proximity to world-class cuisine. From Indonesian to Korean to Hungarian to Ethiopian — in Chicago, you can have it all!
If you’re a foodie as I am, you’ll be happy that it’s about the eats this time around for Date Me! We are going to Demera Ethiopian Restaurant. I stumbled across this quaint gem one evening of wandering the city streets having a craving for something delicious.
Demera is in Chicago’s edgy Edgewater neighborhood. It is about 15 minutes north of the Loop on the redline — close to the lake shore and filled with vintage theaters, bars and interesting eateries. Edgewater should be on your list. Demera looks like a hole in the wall, but make no mistake. This place is delicious! It is Michelin Guide recommended!
To start, I recommend the sambussas. These are the Ethiopian version of empanadas, and they are just the perfect amount of crunchy and savory. You can have your sambussa filled with beef, chicken, tuna, spinach or lentils. I liked the chicken and spinach best.
Skip the salads, of course, and go straight for the meat! If you like things on the spicy side, you are at the right place. The Ye-Beg Wot (lamb) and the Ye-Siga Wot (beef) are absolutely delicious and have the perfect amount of kick. Demera is Ethiopian-style dining, so be prepared to eat with your hands.
